NOPD Supports Law Enforcement Engagement Initiative

NOPD Supports the Law Enforcement Engagement Initiative

Special Event Announcement

Join us in partnership with the The New Orleans Police Department, Wednesday, September 9th, at 2pm, on the steps of NOPD Headquarters, 715 South Broad, to announce support of a national effort known as the Law Enforcement Engagement Initiative (LEEI).

Spearheaded by Arturo Venegas, Jr., a former Police Superintendent of the Sacramento Police Department in California, LEEI seeks “to advance the dialogue towards common-sense immigration reform among policing professionals and for their voice of reason to be heard throughout America.”

“The public safety success of law enforcement requires that all members of our communities become engaged as our “eyes and ears” partners. An actively engaged and properly educated resident is one of the best tools in combating crime and terror and in making neighborhoods safe. A community cannot be healthy and safe if its members loose trust or are afraid of their law enforcement officers.”

The New Orleans Police Department believes that it must create an environment in which victims of crime, regardless of their immigration status, feel they can trust law enforcement. Creating this trust is critical to increasing public safety for the general population, but it will remain challenged if victims of crimes fail to report these crimes due to fear and distrust of law enforcement officials. As a result, Chief Warren Riley, Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department will announce NOPD’s support of LEEI.

Former Superintendent Venegas, Jr. will be on hand to provide a brief overview and field questions from the media and the community. We hope you can join us for this important event on Wednesday, September 9th, at 2pm at NOPD Headquarters.
