Slidell Uses Robbery Incident to Improve Relations with Latino Community

Saturday, July 12, 2008, the Times-Picayune reported about a Slidell police officer who robbed non English speaking Latinos after pulling them over. Apparently, the police officer felt that he could intimidate his victims into silence behind his badge and the language barrier that existed among those he victimized. However, one victim decided to report the incident, which initiated an internal investigation that resulted in the dismissal of the police officer and criminal charges brought against him. In an editorial on July 15, 2008, the Times-Picayune applauded the efforts of the Slidell Police Department “to appoint Detective Brian Brown as a liaison with Spanish-speaking Slidell residents.” According to the editorial, the move by the department to pro-actively address future concerns within the Hispanic community was a smart move.
